Like you, I’ve been watching the presidential nomination contests. I’ll leave it to others to discuss the Republican side of things, as I’m not going to be voting for anyone they nominate.
As for the Democrats – I feel for the Bernie supporters. I was in your shoes eight years ago, when Hillary was losing. It was not a good feeling. But I’m determined not to repeat the treatment I received from Obama supporters, ill-will that continued right through the convention.
A candidate’s supporters can be off the charts sometimes – we’ve all seen it. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s not lose sight of the prize: a win in November.
The primary season will soon be over. Just be patient.
I totally agree with the thoughts in your blog, Vivian. They are so very important and supporters from both Hillary’s and Bernie’s side must understand that at this point It all boils down to winning the general election. If our ‘personal’ favorite loses, we absolutely cannot just sit down and wait for another 4 or 8 years to pass to fight again. We have to continue the fight the day after we win or lose.
It also comes down to hoping that all these newly inspired supporters of both our candidates will remember that win or lose – they STILL have to stay active in the local and state elections to give the winner the support she or he needs.
Whoever wins, Hillary or Bernie, is going to need the support after they get to the Oval Office if they hope to see the policies they ran on, succeed. It’s not enough to support and vote during the primaries and caucuses. The hard work starts in January next year when the winner has to deal with what often becomes a Senate and House determined NOT to work with a new president. (Oh my, why is that so familiar sounding?)
Those who are newly motivated and newly political-minded have to understand the connection between getting their presidential candidate elected AND the necessity of following up in also getting their representatives, senators, general assemblymen/women elected as well. Without doing that, it’s the fight with aligators every day as we’ve watched for nearly the past 7+ years. / Jane Massey
